Our Team

Dean Hankins

Owner / Mechanic

Born and raised in the Cowichan Valley.

Dean Has been in the marine trade for 35 years. Starting out in Cowichan Bay. Over the years he has worked in Vancouver, Port Alberni and Parksville. Then he started his own home based business in 1999. After 13 yrs at home we expanded & moved to our current location. Taking on 4 mechanics and a mercury dealership.

You will find Dean wherever he is needed during the day. He may be helping the boys, busy at his desk doing estimates, sourcing parts, troubleshooting jobs, finding answers to the never ending supply of questions. Dean is always happy to answer questions and give his well acquired advice.

Karen Hankins

Office Manager

Raised in the Cowichan Valley.

You will find me most days in the office answering phones, booking in customers, ordering parts or god knows what. But don’t ask me mechanical questions, at that point I will be more than happy to get one of our qualified mechanics to get all your questions answered and your concerns addressed. Then I will be happy to get your repairs booked in.

Dean and I have known each other since we were children and have been together going on 20 years, he never hesitates to teach me more about the business if he could he would have a wrench in my hand most days.

I think we have a great team here and welcome you to come in and get to know us.

Danielle Forrest

Sales / Purchasing

I started working in the marine industry at the age of 19 for a company in Nanaimo called The Harbour Chandler. Where I worked on and off for 17 years ,that’s where my experience and knowledge began to grow . I was born and raised in Nanaimo  . I was looking to move to the area and the opportunity came to work with Dean & Karen as my in-laws are long time customers of theirs .With the new location they had a empty showroom that needed filling , I was excited and nervous for the challenge . Two years later and the showroom is filled with products for your boat . My family and I have settled in Cowichan Valley  as well so no more long commute for me .  I look forward to the future with Deans Marine . Stop in and say Hi and if you have any suggestions on an item you would like to see in the store, please let me know.

Yard Person / Apprentice

Hi ! I am Joseph,

I am 15 years old and enjoy working on anything mechanical , that started in 2020 when I was forced to homeschool because of Covid restrictions. The restrictions became the base where I realized homeschooling was the best way for me to continue learning my passions and further my education . I am thankful to have started at Deans Marine where I do a mixture of jobs and begin my apprenticeship as a marine technician.

History

From the Cowichan Valley

Dean started his home based business in 1999.

After steady growth and the addition of a couple new employees. We decided that spending 2-3 hrs a day moving boats in & out, that it was time to make the move. So in August of 2021, we moved, and our current location is 5295 Chaster Rd #2. No more backing down the long skinny driveway or waiting for us to move boats out for our very loyal and patient customers. Some days we even had boats at our neighbour’s for lack of space. ( We had great neighbours )

Well, 10 years later we find ourselves with

  • A Mercury Motor Dealership
  • Full Time Certified Mechanics
  • Full Time Apprentices
  • Full Time Parts Person
  • Full Time Web Guy
  • Full Time Sales Person
  • Part Time Bookkeeper
  • A Very friendly dog named Abi
  • A Shy & friendly-vocal dog named Jimmy

And Dean Overseeing all operations

We pride ourselves on being a marine mechanic teaching shop ….. With all that in Deans head…..
