Born and raised in the Cowichan Valley.
Dean Has been in the marine trade for 35 years. Starting out in Cowichan Bay. Over the years he has worked in Vancouver, Port Alberni and Parksville. Then he started his own home based business in 1999. After 13 yrs at home we expanded & moved to our current location. Taking on 4 mechanics and a mercury dealership.
You will find Dean wherever he is needed during the day. He may be helping the boys, busy at his desk doing estimates, sourcing parts, troubleshooting jobs, finding answers to the never ending supply of questions. Dean is always happy to answer questions and give his well acquired advice.
Raised in the Cowichan Valley.
You will find me most days in the office answering phones, booking in customers, ordering parts or god knows what. But don’t ask me mechanical questions, at that point I will be more than happy to get one of our qualified mechanics to get all your questions answered and your concerns addressed. Then I will be happy to get your repairs booked in.
Dean and I have known each other since we were children and have been together going on 16 years, he never hesitates to teach me more about the business if he could he would have a wrench in my hand most days.
I think we have a great team here and welcome you to come in and get to know us.
Hello, my name is Ashley. I grew up here on beautiful Vancouver Island in quiet, Cedar-by-the-sea, where my love for the ocean, river and lakes, we are so fortunate to have, began. Although my past work history is varied, from retail to catering and line cooking, I do have 10 years’ experience in office administration. I have been a part of the Dean’s Marine family for 7 years now, when my husband Terence, started working for Dean when he was still working out of his back yard. This little company has seen big changes in those 7 years and now my face is one of them. A couple days a week I will be greeting you all on the phones and at the front desk when you come in to drop off and pick up your boats. When I’m not here at Dean’s Marine I’m usually doing one of the million things it takes to raise a beautiful, athletic 17 year old, a crazy, rambunctious 3 year old, run a household and work another job. I look forward to seeing you at the shop!
I am a BC girl through and through, raised in the Fraser Valley and now living in the beautiful Cowichan Valley with my husband and 2 boys.
Most of my professional life has been in front-line customer service, so a few years ago I changed things up drastically and started learning about the ‘behind the scenes’ of business by obtaining my Bookkeeping Certificate from Okanagan College, which now has me sitting most of the time with my back to the customer!
As a true born extrovert, I can’t get through the day without interacting with people in some way, so you will still see me in the shop making conversation and having fun with our team and our great customers.
I love being part of the Dean’s Marine family and a local business in the Cowichan Valley. Don’t hesitate to make me turn around and say ”hi” when you stop by!
Mercury Certified Technician. Raised in the Cowichan Valley.
Hi, my name is Terence and I have always had an interest in mechanics since I was a kid. My family has always maintained their own Vehicles, which is where my learning and tinkering started.
I began my trade in 2011 attending VIU. I also have experience in construction and even though Marine Mechanics is my career, I still enjoy getting out and seeing what I can build. In my free time, I keep myself busy doing online courses, working towards getting my mercury certification. Also, taking the time to talk to our customers, answering questions and getting to know you all makes me enjoy my job even more.
Journeyman. Suzuki Certified Technician. Born and raised in Bamfield, BC.
Hi, my name is Lucas. Growing up on a float-house allowed me to experience the majestic west coast. I was immersed in boating from a young age, as it was my main source of transportation. I remember being 8 year old when I first became fascinated with the way engines worked; which 12 years later led me to pursue a career in Marine Mechanics from VIU. I did my apprenticeship at Breakers Marine, where I obtained my Suzuki certification. After completing my apprenticeship in Bamfield, I moved to the Cowichan Valley to further my experience in the field.
On my spare time, I enjoy working on small engines and automotive projects. I am excited to learn more about Mercury engines and increase my knowledge by becoming Mercury certified.

Mercury Certified Technician. Born and raised in Yellowknife.
Hi, my name is Richard. I was born and raised in Yellowknife NWT on and around the beautiful lakes. From the age of 12 when I bought a canoe you could always find me enjoying life afloat.
I started twisting wrenches on everything from chainsaws to forklifts at the age of 22. Right away I knew I was hooked on working in a shop.
I moved to the Cowichan valley in 2013 and figured it was time for a change. Getting into the marine industry, I worked towards certification as a Marine Mechanic with Deans Marine.
At the end of 2019, I decided to change my tool box for a desk and became the new parts person. Now I’ll greet you with a smile and help you find that part or accessory your needing to get back on the water.
When I’m not at work, I’m spending time with my family, taking my 2 kids on bike rides, diving, enjoying the outdoors, or volunteering in my community.
Feel free to stop in and say hi, I’m always up for a chat.
Hi, my name is Thinh. I was born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam. From a young age, I have always wanted to become a mechanic. I grew up repairing anything that was broken in the house.
When it came time for college, my parents wanted me to dive into the health and sciences. I came to realize this field was not for me after I completed two years of education in the Medical Laboratory Lab Assistant program at Camosun College. Instead, my passion led me to gradutating with a diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Category M at BCIT, in early 2020.
What inspired me to become a marine mechanic?
My Dad and younger brother were involved in trade boats and outboard engines-from Evinrude and Yamaha – while I was in aviation school. I would get joy from helping them repair outboards when I was not in school. It brought me joy to hear the sound of a dead come to life again! I have since been hooked on engines. I guess you can say that I “eat & sleep” anything outboard engines related. I decided I would extend my education and become a marine technician as well.
I am grateful that Deans Marine give me the opportunity as an apprentice and training me to the high standard. I learn something new everyday. The staff here are super friendly, kind and knowledgeable, which has made me feel right at home.
Hi, my name is Braydon. I was born and raised in the Cowichan valley.
Growing up, my family gave me great opportunities to fish and explore our incredible West Coast.
I was previously employed as a Mobile Crane Operator. Throughout my time doing that I would always come back to the thought of doing marine mechanics.
I have always enjoyed anything marine related, whether it’s boating, fishing, or wrenching.
I am very thankful that Deans Marine gave me the opportunity to continue my career in a field of work in which I will enjoy everyday. I am looking forward to one day becoming Mercury Outboard certified, as well as a certified Journeymen in this trade.
Hi! My name is Kyle.
I was born in Duncan and have grown to the age of Fourteen in the Cowichan Valley. I am currently in grade 9 at Quamichan Middle School. Due to COVID-19 and there being no school, I decided to find a Job. There was no better fit than Deans Marine where my uncle Terence works.
So I approached Deans Marine Ltd., about the chance of working there and they told me to bring down a resume.
So here I am at Deans Marine and enjoying it. Marine Mechanics is something that I am very interested in.
Thanks Dean and Karen for the opportunity to have my first real job.
